Doctor of Audiology, Director Shortly after finishing his Master's Degree in Audiology at the University of Connecticut in 1976, Dr. Berkey completed a portion of his clinical training here in the Asheville area. This experience impacted him so strongly that he wished to return to this area and enjoy all of the beauty and quality of life that Asheville brings. Dr. Berkey founded The Hearing Center of Asheville in 1992 after moving here from his native Los Angeles. Prior to his move to the mountains, Dr. Berkey founded and directed a very successful audiology practice in West Los Angeles for 14 years. You can say that audiology has been in his blood as his parents ran a hearing aid practice that they established in 1950. This allowed Dr. Berkey to form an early appreciation of the unique challenges that a hearing impaired person faces every day. When Audiology began its transition to a Doctoral level of care, Dr. Berkey was among the first graduates of A.T. Still University’s Au.D. (Doctor of Audiology) program for current practitioners in the year 2001. Since opening The Hearing Center of Asheville, Dr. Berkey has sought to deliver premium hearing healthcare to the people of Western North Carolina. He has done this through state-of-the-art equipment, continuing education, and a deep care and respect for the people he helps. Dr. Berkey is nationally known in his field through publications and service to national organizations. He is currently the President of the Academy of Doctors of Audiology, a well-known and respected national organization of audiologists in independent practice. On the personal side, Dr. Berkey has a love of travel and music. He has been involved in performing in community theatre, singing, playing the piano, and a host of other stringed instruments. He is the father to three adult children. Send an e-mail to Dr. Berkey. ![]() Christopher Hamilton, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology Dr. Hamilton is a native of Western North Carolina and eagerly returned to the mountains following completion of the Doctor of Audiology program at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. The Chicago area provided many excellent opportunities for practical experiences and Dr. Hamilton filled his time working as a research assistant and clinician in some of the most prestigious audiology research and clinical facilities in the nation. Upon returning to Asheville he was pleased to find the opportunity to join The Hearing Center of Asheville and has quickly made himself at home. Dr. Hamilton received his undergraduate degree from Western Carolina University, building on a background in audio engineering, auditory science, and music. He found early inspiration in the recording studio of his father, developing an interest in audio science and music performance. Prior to beginning his graduate studies, he worked with children and at-risk teenagers, leading to an interest in a future helping profession. A career in audiology was the perfect opportunity to apply the knowledge and enjoyment gained from a pastime to a day-to-day service to the community. Dr. Hamilton has special interest in high-fidelity sound reproduction, hearing aids, and hearing conservation for musicians. When the clinic doors are closed, you may find Dr. Hamilton hiking and playing in the mountains of Western North Carolina with his wife and two daughters. The weekends are filled with sandboxes, tricycles, and nap time. When time allows, Dr. Hamilton enjoys picking up a guitar or mandolin.
